Taylor Swift Fans Shake It Off Too Hard And Cause Minor Earthquake During Concert

Zinger Key Points
  • Taylor Swift has broken several records during her current concert tour.
  • The singer set records for Lumen Field during a recent tour stop in Seattle, Washington.

Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift has done it all over the last year, smashing Billboard records, overwhelming ticket websites due to high demand, and delivering a record-setting concert tour.

Swift might be able to add one more thing to her list of accomplishments: fans causing an earthquake.

What Happened: Demand for Taylor Swift concert tickets remains high, which might point to why Ticketmaster parent company Live Nation Entertainment LYV saw an increase in tickets sold and revenue in its recent quarter report.

Swift recently played back-to-back nights at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington, the home of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.

The musician shattered the record for the largest concert audience at the venue, attracting 72,000 fans. She also became the first singer to sell out the venue for back-to-back nights, according to GlobalNews.

A report from a seismologist also points to Swift and her fans causing a minor earthquake during the concerts. Seismologist Jackie Caplan-Auerbach said the fans caused the equivalent of a 2.3 magnitude earthquake, dubbing the event a “Swift Quake.”

The earthquake registered throughout the three-plus hours of songs from Swift each night, with the largest “tremors” coming during hit songs “Shake It Off” and “Blank Space.”

Why It’s Important: Large sporting events have been known to register on the earthquake scale due to fan noise.

Caplan-Auerbach said the “Swift Quake” came in ahead of the “Beast Quake” of 2011, which happened during a touchdown celebration for former Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch.

The seismologist said the seismic activity could have been due to sounds from the concert like bass and subwoofers, from the large crowd noise, or a combination of both.
